In Hindu scriptures, Kaliya is described as a vicious Naga, who lived in the river Yamuna, near Vrindavan.
Kaliya was said to have several hoods and the venom secreted by him constantly boiled the water.
His vile presence had infested the Yamuna’s water, which caused the death of the cows in Vrindavan.
To save his village from the venomous serpent, youthful Lord Krishna jumped into the river.
Kaliya took Lord Krishna’s presence as trespassing and clutched him in his coil.
This resulted in a combat, where Lord Krishna assumed the weight of the whole universe.
After releasing from Kaliya’s grip, he sprang on his head and began to dance on his hood.
Lord Krishna only stopped when Kaliya with his wives worshiped him for sparing his life.
This is why Lord Krishna is also called Kaliyamardan, which means the one who tamed Kaliya.
