There hasn't been any new case of the foot-and-mouth disease reported.... after a second case of the disease was confirmed in Anseong yesterday... and the government has rolled up its sleeves to make sure that things are safe and sound for the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday.
Our Seo Bo-bin has the latest.
A second case of foot-and-mouth disease has been confirmed at a cow farm in the city of Anseong, just a day after the government confirmed a type-O variant of the highly-contagious disease in the same city.
No other suspected outbreaks have been reported since the second confirmation.
The second farm is located just 11-kilometers away from the first.
The confirmation came after the owner of the second farm reported that three out of 97 cows at the farm were showing symptoms of FMD, such as drooling and shaking legs.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs says that,... if another case is confirmed,... it will take further preventive steps to keep the disease from spreading to other regions,... especially with the Lunar New Year holiday just a matter of days away.
The Lunar New Year holiday is five-day period when millions of people in Korea travel across the country to spend time with their families.
As a result,... officials are concerned the disease could spread to a wider area and quickly get out of control.
On Monday, quarantine officials culled 120 cows at the farm where the disease first broke out.
There was also a 24-hour lockdown placed on all farm animals within three kilometers of the affected farm, which ended on Tuesday evening.
The lockdown applied to 89 farms and affected about 5,000 animals.
The ministry also said some 440-thousand cows in Anseong, along with nearly one-point-four million cows and pigs in neighboring cities and towns will receive vaccinations.
