A political analyst said that the narrow margin of the result of Tuesday's vote of confidence in Theresa May's government was "a very stark reminder" to the prime minister that "her ability to keep her government in office" depended on the support of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).
John Curtice added that the difficulty will be "that the kind of relatively radical change to the Northern Ireland backstop provisions" that members of the DUP and some Conservatives argue for, will not be something the EU is "going to be willing to offer".
