Donald Trump spoke to the American public in a prime-time TV address on January 8, stressing the need for US$5.7 billion to fund a border wall. In his first national address from the Oval Office, the US president claimed there is a humanitarian crisis at the US-Mexico border, as he urged Democrats to support legislation that would end an ongoing government shutdown over the issue. But as Trump invited Congressional leadership for a meeting about the issue on January 9, top Democrats House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer refuted Trump’s claims in their own address to the American people.
