House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi recently compared President Trump's latest border wall plan to a "beaded curtain." She said in an interview with USA Today that was published on Tuesday: "First of all, the fact...that he says, 'We're going to build a wall with cement, and Mexico's going to pay for it' while he's already backed off of the cement – now he's down to, I think, a beaded curtain or something, I'm not sure where he is." Her remark comes in the wake of a partial government shutdown that began after lawmakers could not agree on a budget given the president's demand for $5 billion in border wall funding.
On Friday, Trump shared an image of the new fence-like design being considered in place of a solid structure via Twitter and wrote, "A design of our Steel Slat Barrier which is totally effective while at the same time beautiful!" He addressed the wall and shutdown issue again in a Christmas Eve tweet, noting, "I am all alone (poor me) in the White House waiting for the Democrats to come back and make a deal on desperately needed Border Security. At some point the Democrats not wanting to make a deal will cost our Country more money than the Border Wall we are all talking about. Crazy!" Negotiations on the matter will reportedly resume no sooner than Thursday.
