Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India's longest rail-cum-road bridge in Assam on Tuesday. Bogibeel Bridge will connect Assam’s Dibrugarh on the south bank to Dehamji in the north.
The bridge over the Brahmaputra will boost defence logistics along the China border and reduce travel time for rail passengers and road users. The bridge got completed after 21 years after former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda laid the foundation stone on 22 January 1997 but the project was flagged-off by Atal Bihari Bajpayee on April 21, 2002.
