The song was actually originally written in 2008 at the time I was hunting for song ideas and on one occasion after a gig in Xaymaca, I was with a lady friend and I was swamped entertaining people... Anyway I asked her “o, are you ok?” and she replied “eto. Malungkot pero masaya rin.” That’s where I got the idea for the song. It was Mike (Bewer) who helped me put it together, initially. I went to his studio (back then may studio sya) and we worked on it. We recorded the melody, lyrics and one guitar for guide. The other guys in my old band then were not so open to the sound. When my old band and I started to play again back in 2010 or 2011 i reintroduced the song to the guys and we actually tried playing it. But, it was not unanimously accepted by the guys. So, fast forward to the present. My current manager and long-time friend, Miren, plus Ian Umali, also a close friend, gave it a chance....we agreed to partner in late 2016 to help find my own sound, re-launch Vic the way this core group knew me, Vic. As we progressed and experimented, we found kindred musicians and artists along the way and here we are today. Finally, able to launch this song, re-written, re-mixed, re-rendered and in the time that it needed to happen, we recorded the song. This song has gone through time and it’s a fitting first single. By it’s own life, so to speak, it’s also a “malungkot na masaya” moment. Similar to the saying: “better late than never,” “malungkot na masaya" is a very Filipino reality. When we were recording it with Mike and Loloy (Biscaro), Loloy pointed out that he has waited 13 years to record with me and Ian. “malungkot pero masaya” di ba? Same goes with Mike. Same goes with Paw I think. Several times we were joking about the malungkot pero very masaya moments as we were recording. It was awesome. My moment is the fact that I have waited so long to record a new Tagalog song. How I wish I was in my twenties right now. But, hey, masaya pa rin ako that me, Ian and Miren are working on the songs I want now. The song portrays how Filipinos deal with tragic situations, too. Like, for example, a family reunion every time somebody dies--Sad because of the loss but glad to meet family members for the first time in many years.... Like when you get a new puppy after your old loved dog dies. Or, when buying cheap hard drinks with the last of the group’s money but converting it into a really memorable time that, in fact, it beats spending thousands in a high-end Manila club. Anyway that’s what I was thinking of today. I'm grateful for the faith my core team has put into making sure I start putting out the songs that mean something to me again.
