Samsung Electronics has been one of the world's top smartphone companies for a number of years now.
However,... staying at the top requires not only first-class products, but a huge marketing budget.
And a new report shows Samsung is putting its money where its mouth is... when it comes to advertising and promotion.
Seo Bo-bin has the details.
South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics was the world's largest advertiser last year, spending more on commercial activities and promotions than any other global corporation.
According to "The World's 100 Largest Advertisers" list released by global advertising consulting firm AdAge, Samsung Electronics took the top spot for the first time ever.
The report says Samsung spent eleven-point-two billion U.S. dollars on advertising and sales promotion in 2017, up 13 percent from the previous year.
The report notes how the increased spending was mainly due to the company's efforts to improve its brand image after the global recall of the Galaxy Note 7 in 2016.
Defects in the phone's battery caused many Note 7 units to overheat and combust or explode.
The American multi-national consumer goods corporation Procter & Gamble was second,... spending ten-and-a-half billion dollars on advertising and other marketing costs.
L'Oreal, Unilever and Nestle rounded out the rest of the top five.
Total spending on advertising by the world's 100 largest advertisers was 279 billion dollars in 2017, up nearly five percent from the previous year, with 68 of them expanding spending on advertising and promotion.
