Japan’s freediving fisher grannies

The once-thriving Japanese “ama” community of freediving fisherwomen now consists of a dwindling group aged 60 to 80. Using no diving gear, these “women of the sea” hold their breath as they search the seabed for shellfish, including turbot, abalone - and sometimes pearl-bearing clams. While the “ama” divers would like to see their ancient tradition continue, few young women are willing to take up the difficult job.
