According to Politico, California Republican Kevin McCarthy was elected House leader for the GOP.
House Republican McCarthy has been touted as the next congressional leader for the GOP in the lower house of the legislature, as Speaker of the House Paul Ryan is retiring from office.
McCarthy got 159 votes for the House leadership role, compared to Representative Jim Jordan's 43 votes.
Representative Steve Scalise will serve as minority whip in the upcoming Congress, while Representative Liz Cheney will serve as the Republican Conference chairwoman.
