There is a new addition in the upper ranks of Democrats’ preferred 2020 presidential contenders.
The upper ranks of Democrats' preferred 2020 presidential contenders are still dominated by former Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Bernie Sanders, but another possible candidate appears to be gaining ground. A Politico/Morning Consult poll shows Beto O'Rourke, the Texas congressman who came quite close to claiming the U.S. Senate seat held by Ted Cruz, in the third spot, with 8% of the roughly 1,950 recipients naming him as their top pick. Biden and Sanders, who received 26% and 19%, respectively continue to hold the lead. Rounding out the top five are Senators Elizabeth Warren with 5% and Kamala Harris at 4%. Tyler Sinclair, Morning Consult's vice president, commented: "O'Rourke is emerging to be an outside contender for the 2020 Democratic nomination, outpacing other potential nominees." The poll was conducted from November 7 to November 9.
This news comes amid renewed speculation that Hillary Clinton is considering another presidential run in 2020.
Former Clinton adviser Mark Penn and his fellow writer Andrew Stein write in a Wall Street Journal op-ed: "Get ready for Hillary Clinton 4.0...Mrs. Clinton will fight this out until the last dog dies. She won't let a little thing like two stunning defeats stand in the way of her claim to the White House."
