After his Bar Mitzva, a boy either goes to work with his father,
or else he learns a trade from some other relative.
Our village carpenter makes our wooden farm tools ....
as well as fashioning the doors, window frames and roofs for our homes.
The carpenter also fixes the tools of the stone-masons,
the men who build the rough stone walls of our simple houses.
But Nazareth -- being just a small village --
can't supply enough work for all our craftsmen.
Synch Richard:
The builders of a village like Nazareth, they would go to the surrounding towns, like Tzipori.
Just a few miles from Nazareth, Tzipori is a bustling town,
on its way to becoming the Capital of the Galilee.
We villagers are the workers for Tzipori's luxurious villas.
Synch Arieh We take donkey and around half an hour donkey ride we are there in Tzipori. And even though we are farmers, in Tzipori they need mason workers, so that's what we do.
In stark contrast to Nazareth's simplicity,
these rich Jews follow the latest Roman ways --
even decorating their homes with painted walls and mosaic floors.
Synch Arieh: We in Nazareth hardly had a floor to sleep, but when I see the mosaics working in their homes, I look and say where all this money comes from?
