Noisy protest greets mining firm Vedanta's final London AGM

An activist group in London staged a "loud" demonstration outside the final annual general meeting of Indian mining tycoon Anil Agarwal's Vedanta Resources on Monday (October 1) to demand justice for protesters killed in a police shooting at the company's copper smelter in India in May.

The controversial company is to be de-listed from the London Stock Exchange, following the recent killing of 13 protestors during a 100-day campaign against a copper smelting plant at Thoothukudi, in the Tamil Nadu region of India.

Campaigners from the Foil Vedanta group say that this is just the latest in a long history of human rights abuses and environmental disasters.

Miriam Rose from the campaign group accused Vedanta officials of running away from London to avoid investigation and prosecution.
