Drone footage of a section of Interstate 40 in Pender County, North Carolina, shows the highway looking more like a canal for long stretches, in the wake of Hurricane Florence.
Hundreds of people had to be airlifted from flood-hit areas of the county, emergency management said on September 17, with several areas still under mandatory evacuation order.
Adam Wagner, a local reporter, tweeted: “In Pender County, officials are urging people who are still in the Black River and Northeast Cape Fear areas to get on their roofs with a flashlight and a towel. If they hear a helicopter or a five-ton truck, make noise and wave the towel or shine the flashlight.”
