Over 1 million people marched in Barcelona, and in other parts of Catalonia, for independence on September 11, according to reports.
Catalan police, the Mossos, thanked everyone for demonstrating safely and without incident in such a large event on Twitter. Tuesday marked the first National Day of Catalonia since the Catalan regional government launched its own referendum on independence from Spain on October 1 2017. The vote was marked by violent scenes as Spanish national police and Guardia Civil raided polling stations and the arrest of Catalan separatist leaders involved in organising the vote, which was ruled to be illegal by Spain’s supreme court.
