President Trump tweeted about economy in an apparent response to former President Obama's comment.
President Trump on Monday asserted that a Democratic victory in 2016 would have caused the economy to shrink significantly.
"If the Democrats had won the Election in 2016, GDP, which was about 1% and going down, would have been minus 4% instead of up 4.2%. I opened up our beautiful economic engine with Regulation and Tax Cuts. Our system was choking and would have been made worse. Still plenty to do!" Trump tweeted.
His tweet came after former President Obama on Friday appeared to jab Trump on his claims about the economy.
"When you hear how great the economy is doing right now, let's just remember when this recovery started," Obama said during a speech at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
"By the time I left office, household income was near its all-time high and the uninsured rate had hit an all-time low and wages were rising. Poverty rates were falling," Obama also said.
"I'm glad it's continued. But when you hear about this economic miracle that's been going on, when the job numbers come out and suddenly Republicans are saying it's a miracle, I had to kind of remind them actually those job numbers are the same as they were in 2015 and 2016," Obama added.
Trump, however, has repeatedly stated that it's his administration policies that are responsible for the recent economic growth.
"Our Economy is setting records on virtually every front - Probably the best our country has ever done. Tremendous value created since the Election. The World is respecting us again! Companies are moving back to the U.S.A," Trump tweeted last month.
