'It Validates Us as Humans' - Activists Look Forward as Supreme Court Strikes Down Gay Sex Ban

Gay rights activists were celebrating in India on September 6 as the country’s Supreme Court decriminalized gay sex.

The verdict comes after the court was petitioned to rule on a law known as Section 377, which had prohibited “carnal intercourse against the order of nature". The Supreme Court said Section 377 amounted to “discrimination and is violative of constitutional principles,” the Times of India said.

An “immensely important judgment,” says a woman speaking in this video. “The legal system now recognizes us as humans. It has given us an identity … This is a monumental decision. It validates us as humans.”

Two other women talk about the problems that have faced gay people in Indian. Hopefully, one says, fewer gay people in India would need to go into hiding, and “won’t be getting death threats.”

“It has paved the road for a better tomorrow for us,” the first woman says. Credit: @GoNews24x7 via Storyful
