The Los Angeles Police Department released footage on September 4 showing the shooting and hostage situation that took place July 21at a Silverlake Trader Joe’s.
The newly-released footage includes dashcam and bodycam video, in addition to audio recordings of the 911 calls placed during the incident.
The LAPD said the suspect, Gene Atkins, had shot his grandmother several times before kidnapping a girl, who he also shot. He then stole his grandmother’s car and fled with the girl, resulting in a police pursuit through Los Angeles. Atkins crashed his car near a Trader Joe’s and attempted to evade officers by running inside.
This footage shows Atkins and police officers exchanged gunfire as Atkins runs into the grocery store. One of the police officer’s bullets fatally struck the Trader Joe’s store manager, and another bullet struck Atkins in the arm.
Atkins and police remained in a stand-off for several hours as Atkins held over 40 employees and customers hostage, before eventually surrendering to police.
