Locals across the Big Island braced themselves for Hurricane Lane's landfall on August 23 as the storm moved closer to the state.

This video shows a worker using a bulldozer to build a sand wall to guard against the storm.

Hurricane Lane, forecast to make landfall in the state, lashed the Big Island with nearly 20 inches of rain in 24 hours. Shelters were opened up on Big Island and in Maui, Molokai and Lanai to house evacuated residents.

The hurricane was downgraded to a Category 3 storm later in the day.
