Wailuku River Roars Through Hilo

The Waikulu River, Hawaii’s longest, was a raging torrent of water on Thursday, August 23, swelled by the deluge brought to the Big Island by Hurricane Lane.

Hilo, where the river empties into the Pacific Ocean, had experienced 15 inches of rain since Wednesday evening, local media reported.

The Big Island and Maui were the first to be pounded by Lane’s rains, while the rest of the islands waited their turn. Credit: George Orais-Bonheimer via Storyful
