Environmental activist Matthew Doming shot video of his university’s student organization taking part in a cleanup effort in Manila Bay, Philippines, on August 11.

Doming attends San Beda University-Riza, where he is part of the Bedan Environmental Philosophers Organization school club, a student organization that aims to promote environmental awareness.

Doming attended a cleanup event sponsored by a company in the Philippines. The event was canceled due to bad weather, but he and his classmates ignored the weather conditions and worked to clear trash from the bay.

Doming told Storyful the experience was overwhelming because it was the groups’ first time witnessing the extent of garbage pollution in the area. “It was such a horrible scene but instead of being dismayed, they were motivated to serve in line with the mission of our club, despite the discomfort,” he said.

Doming and his classmates hope to spread awareness about environmental issues in the Philippines and to inspire the world to start taking action. “We must realize that we are neither alienated nor superior to nature. We are part of nature. Whatever we do to it will come back to us,” said Doming. Credit: Matthew Doming via Storyful
