The National Weather Service said the College Lake dam in Lynchburg, Virginia, was in danger of failing on August 2, as significant flooding wreaked havoc on the city.

The Lynchburg Department of Emergency Services said the threat of the dam failing prompted evacuations for residents in the Blackwater Creek Trail area, with a temporary shelter set up at EC Glass High School.

WSLS reported that in the event of a complete dam failure, the water depth could exceed 17 feet in seven minutes.
