President Trump on Sunday faced backlash for posting an old Michael Cohen tweet.
President Trump is facing backlash after he reposted a tweet from his former lawyer Michael Cohen, who wrote last July: "So proud of @DonaldJTrumpJr for being open, honest and transparent to the American people. This nonsense needs to stop!"
The president added the comment, "Do you think the Fake News Media will ever report on this tweet from Michael?"
This message comes just days after CNN reported based on inside sources that Cohen is claiming Trump knew his son and other campaign officials were planning to meet with Russians about Hillary Clinton despite repeated denials that the then-candidate knew about these plans in advance.
Social media responded quickly to the president's post, with one person writing, "He worked for you at the time. Now he's free to tell the truth."
And someone else stated, "That was back when he would take a bullet for you ...apparently that ship has sailed."
Meanwhile, another Twitter user pointed out, "What about when you called Michael Cohen an honest guy?"
Despite a long working relationship, a rift appears to have formed between Trump and Cohen, with the latter saying in an interview from earlier this month, "I will not be a punching bag as part of anyone's defense strategy. I am not a villain of this story, and I will not allow others to try to depict me that way."
