The Los Angeles Police Department on July 25 released dashcam and bodycam videos showing officers engaging, pursuing and exchanging gunfire with a shooting suspect a Trader Joe’s grocery store in Silver Lake on July 21.

In a statement released on July 23, police said the suspect, 28-year-old Gene Atkins, had shot his 76-year-old grandmother, Mary Madison, and injured a 17-year-old woman before kidnapping the teenager and fleeing in his grandmother’s car. Police later spotted Atkins in the car near the intersection of Cahuenga and Sunset boulevard and he lef them in a pursuit, firing multiple rounds at the officers, the statement said.

Atkins then crashed the car and was shot in the arm by police, before entering a branch of Trader Joe’s in Silver Lake and taking over 40 employees and customer hostage for several hours. As Atkins and police exchanged gunfire, Assistant Manager Melyda Corado was struck by a bullet fired by police officers and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. A second woman was injured by glass fragments, according to the LAPD statement.
