Wildfires raged across Greece, killing at least 50 people and injuring more than 100, firefighters said on Tuesday, July 24.

Most of the victims were reportedly trapped in the seaside resort town of Mati, 25 miles northeast of Athens, and died either in their homes or their cars.

Late Monday night, July 23, rescue teams searched for 10 tourists who reportedly fled the fire on a boat from Mati.

The country’s Civil Protection Agency said Greece would call on the EU for assistance to battle the fires.

Greek Fire Service officials told residents in affected areas to comply with evacuation orders.
