Australian Airport
Replaces Passports
With Your Face Forgetting your
passport at home could
very well become a thing of the past.
At least, that's what Australia thinks. Australia's Department of Home Affairs implemented SmartGates in 2007 to enhance border control technology. This system read your passport and scanned your face at eight major international airports in the country. But now, Australia
wants to make the
process even faster. In May and June of 2017, Australia's
Canberra International Airport
tested the first "contactless"
immigration technology in the world. This system matches a
travelers face to stored data
in order to confirm identity. The country has since teamed up with Qantas, Australia's largest airline, to use the technology in simplifying the departure process, as well. Geoff Culbert, Sydney Airport CEO, via CNET Border controls worldwide
are also replacing humans
with automatic gates
and biometric cameras. Pretty soon, you'll
enter a country without
having to present a passport
or speak to a person.
