Protests over a lack of employment and services in the Iraqi city of Basra continued on July 12, marking the fifth day of demonstrations, despite talks with local officials.

One man was killed and three injured on the first day of protests when police opened fire on July 8.

The deceased man was from the Bani Mansour tribe, according to Arab News.

Protesters met with a government official on July 10 to discuss the deterioration of electricity supply, the unsanitary water supply and the lack of employment opportunities.

The governor of Basra, Asaad Al Eidani, said that the demands of protesters would be listened to. Credit: الدعم الحشد الشعبي via Storyful
