A kangaroo joey was seen grooming and playfully pawing at a sleepy cat in a video taken by its carer in the Porongurup Range in Western Australia.

The year-old orphaned joey, named Willow, was found in the pouch of his mother, who was hit by a car and later died.

Carer Anandii Macrides said the young kangaroo, who was a bit of a “social butterfly”, wore a collar not because he was a pet, but for his own protection.

“Willow can be a brat and occasionally does a mad dash,” Macrides said, adding that some people in the area were a “little trigger happy” and are known for shooting animals on their property.

“Everyone around here knows the Roos with the collars are not ‘wild’ Roos. When they are weaned I will remove the collars in case the boys want to go hop with the wild Roos. They will have the choice to stick around or go as they please.” Credit: Anandii Macrides via Storyful
