Typhoon Prapiroon Hits Okinawa Island

Typhoon Prapiroon hit the Japanese southern island of Okinawa on Monday morning, July 2, injuring at least four people and knocking down power lines.

Okinawa Electronic Power said nearly 3,700 homes were without electricity as of 7 am of July 2.

In Naha and three other towns in Okinawa, four people – three men and a woman – were injured, NHK reported. Among them was a firefighter who suffered a broken toe in the town of Chatan after he was hit by a falling debris while he and his colleagues were trying to prevent the roof of a house from being blown away.

The Okinawa prefecture government said more than 130 people evacuated, Kyodo News reported.
