The immense size of this castle covering (1.2 hectares), makes it the largest in Britain after Windsor. Begun in 1268 by the Anglo-Norman marcher lord, Gilbert de Clare. Concentrically planned, the rings of stone and water defences are formidable. The Castle is famous for its 'leaning tower', standing at 15 metres high and leaning 10 degrees out of true vertical, after being blowen up in the Civil War. The impressive Great Hall is now used for various functions and weddings.
