FOXBORO -- The Patriots have an ongoing crisis in their defense.
Graham Gano, who missed an earlier extra point, connected on a 48-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Panthers over the Patriots, 33-30, Sunday at Gillette Stadium.
The second call of the game for illegal use of hands to the face on Stephon Gilmore kept a drive alive with just over two minutes left. The Patriots had appeared to stop Cam Newton with a sack by Deatrich Wise but the flag came out on Gilmore, giving the Panthers hope.
Newton finished 22-of-29 for 316 yards and three touchdowns while Tom Brady was 32-of-45 for 307 yards and two touchdowns for the Patriots, who fall to 2-2.
