Pompeii is a vast archaeological site in southern Italy’s Campania region. It was once a thriving and sophisticated Roman city. It was buried under meters of ash and pumice after Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D. The preserved site features excavated ruins of streets and houses that visitors can explore.
During excavations, liquid plaster was used to fill the voids in the ash that once held human and animal bodies giving often gruesome images of their last moments.
Pompeii is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy, with well over 2 million visitors every year.
Strongly recommended to visit.
