Iranian woman were allowed to enter a Tehran stadium to watch a live broadcast of the World Cup game between Iran and Spain on Wednesday, June 20.

Iran lost 0-1 to Spain, but the event was still a landmark occurrence. The Islamic Republic has barred women from attending men’s sporting events since 1980, and Wednesday’s showing was nearly cancelled due to “infrastructure difficulties” until Tehran police finally let crowds of fans enter Tehran’s Azadi Stadium.

This footage shows female fans in the stadium visible alongside their male counterparts.

The official Twitter account of Iran’s national team posted a photo of a female spectator in the stadium’s stands holding an Iranian flag, with a caption: “Azadi Stadium, now!” Credit: madsbehi via Storyful
