Rising Smoke Blocks Out Sun as Volcano Erupts in Southern Japan

Sakurajima volcano, on Kyushu island in southern Japan, erupted on June 16, blasting smoke thousands of meters into the air, according to Japanese Media.

A number of social media posts from Kagoshima town, located across a bay from the volcano, said that the smoke had blotted out light from the sun and that ash was falling in the area. Credit: Tansui Kaisui via Storyful
