The Japanese parliament has passed a law to lower the legal age of adulthood from 20 to 18.
It is the first time for such a law to be passed in the country in 140 years and will take effect in April 2022.
Among the biggest changes will be allowing 18-year-olds to get married without parental consent.
However, the legal age for drinking, smoking and gambling will remain unchanged at 20.
