Study Finds More Than 200 Common Medications Cause Depression Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago made the link after studying medication use in over 26,000 adults. Their findings revealed that many common medications increase someone’s risk of developing depression, which can lead to suicide. Some of the drugs include hormonal birth control, blood pressure, proton pump inhibitors, antacids and painkillers. The study also showed that 15 percent of adults who used three or more of these drugs concurrently experienced depression. This was compared to 5 percent of those who did not take any medication at all.
