A new study was released Tuesday estimating that at least 4,645 people died in Puerto Rico in the wake of Maria. This death toll is more than 70 times the official government estimate of 64 people. When Maria struck Puerto Rico nearly a year ago, it struck an island that had already long been in distress.Decades of political marginalization, an out-of-date power grid, crumbling roads and a moribund economy amplified the storm’s destructive power.
