Shabana Azmi speaks about her character in Hindi film 'Saaz. She says, "I am playing a playback singer in the film who lost her voice so she starts seeing a psychiatrist and as she starts her analysis she gets back into her past and it's really about her trials and tribulations and her life from the time she's little child to the present age the woman is and her various relationships most importantly with her older sister with her daughter and with a younger man with whom she gets involved.
I did make a very special effort to go and watch Kavita particularly Kavita Krishnamurthy who has sung for me in the film I made it a point to go and watch her while she was recording apart from that I also went and watched some other singers because I did want to get certain infections and I think the one area in which I especially want a particular effect is that what happens is that playback singers have this absolutely magnificent ability to sing with complete involvement and the minute the word is over then they can drink water or they look around and they can relax, clear their throut and get back with total concentration now that I think hasn't been seen on the Indian screen very much."
