Firefighters rushed to the scene in Renfrew Street after they received 999 calls alerting them to the fire just before 12.30pm. The blaze is thought to have started in the building's basement, before it spread to the upper floors with clouds of smoke billowing from the main windows and attic studies. Emergency services closed off the streets surrounding the building, while crying students were led away by university officials for a name count. At least 150 students were evacuated and emergency services reported no casualties.
