North Carolina was hit by rain and thunderstorms on Wednesday, May 30, as part of the tailend of Subtropical Storm Alberto. The conditions prompted evacuations, flooded roadways, and caused mudslides.

Governor Roy Cooper announced a state of emergency for western North Carolina.

The storm claimed the lives of four people, according to local reports.
