Drone footage has captured Pacific white-sided and Northern right whale dolphins swimming with humpback whales in Monterey Bay, California, on May 14.

Nancy Black, who operates Monterey Bay Whale Watch/Gowhales.com, told Storyful around 1,000 dolphins were traveling in a mixed species herd on the date the video was shot. Black said the dolphins were “snout riding” on the whales, surfing on the wave from the whale’s head.

“The dolphins are playful and enjoy annoying the whales a bit to get them to move quicker so they can surf along their head,” Black told Storyful. Credit: Monterey Bay Whale Watch/Gowhales.com via Storyful
