It took Maria Sharapova three years to return to the French Open. Last year she was deprived of a wildcard following a drug suspension. Sharapova earned a seeding this year but had to overturn a late deficit to defeat Dutch qualifier Richel Hogenkamp. The two-time French Open champion was breezing to victory at a set and 3-1 up. But her level dipped and Hogenkamp's elevated, with Sharapova trailing 3-0 in the third. After going a break down in the third, she won six games in a row to advance.
