At least 22 lava fissures have opened in lower Puna, Hawaii, since a May 4 earthquake near the Kilauea volcano. The Star Advertiser said at least 47 structures had been destroyed.
A presidential disaster declaration has been issued for the Kilauea area, according to local reports.
Hawaii News Now said that rivers of lava continued to threaten homes, with eruptions also releasing dangerous gases. Lava entering the ocean was creating high levels of gas, Hawaii Civil Defense said.
