Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency ordered residents at Kamaili Road to evacuate, late on May 10, due to active lava flows from Kīlauea volcano causing brush fires in the area.
Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency said that one flow had crossed Highway 137 at the 13-mile marker and entered the ocean.
They warned that how lava entering the ocean creates sends hydrochloic acid and steam with fine glass particles into the air.
A second flow was about 400 meters from Highway 137. Highway 137 was closed between Kamaili Road and Pohoiki Road. Credit: US Geological Survey via Storyful
