A group of furious nationalists on Saturday attacked the 75-year-old mayor of the Greek city of Thessaloniki.

Yiannis Boutaris was attending the Pontic Genocide commemoration in the city when a dozen or so angry nationalists instructed him to leave the event.

They then threw bottles at him and repeatedly kicked the vehicle which drove him away from the scene.

Boutaris is known for his strong anti-nationalist stance.

The Pontic genocide was the systematic killing of the Christian Ottoman Greek population carried out in Anatolia during World War I and its aftermath.
