Two new fissures opened in Kilauea’s east rift zone in Hawaii on Saturday, May 12, spraying lava up to 100 feet in the air. The 16th fissure was near the Puna Geothermal Venture plant, and the 17th was 100 meters below it, a news report said.

Thousands of area residents have been ordered to be prepared to evacuate, and officials also ordered vacation rentals to cease operations, the news report said. The first eruptions were reported more than a week ago in Leilani Estates in Puna, and the lava flow has destroyed at least 27 homes.
