Supporters Applaud New Malaysia Prime Minister Mahathir

Former Malaysian leader Mahathir Mohamad will become the country’s prime minister once again, after winning an election against incumbent Najib Razak.

Mahathir, 92, who led Malaysia from 1981 to 2003, would become the world’s oldest prime minister. His opposition coalition Pakatan Harapan won 113 seats in parliament, while Najib’s Barisan Nasional coalition, which was the largest party in Malaysia’s 222-seat parliament, only took 79, according to the South China Morning Post.

Najib had been embroiled in scandals that accused him of allegedly receiving US$681 million in payments from state investement fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad, according to Channel NewsAsia.
