NYC Councilman Among Those Arrested at Opioid Crisis Protest

A New York City councilman was among those arrested during a protest about opioid addiction on Wednesday, May 2, at City Hall.

Councilman Stephen Levin was arrested during the protest over Mayor Bill de Blasio’s inaction on Safer Consumption Spaces, which are supervised injection sites intended for users of intravenous drugs such as heroin. Several protesters were blocking traffic before the arrests.

Advocates say the sites would reduce overdose rates and public drug use, a news report said. Among the advocates are Levin and former Mayor David Dinkins. If New York City were to open such a site, it would be the first US city to host one.

City officials commissioned a report on the issue that was supposed to be completed in April, and de Blasio said on Friday it would be released in a matter of days. As of Wednesday, though, the report had yet to be released. Credit: Paulette Soltani via Storyful
