Sherri was one of the very first ever female artists signed to Motown, even before Mary Wells. She recorded several solo records which never came out, but she became well known for her duet with blues singer Sammy Ward, on a track called "Lover". After leaving Motown, she recorded with several labels and also sang with several local girl groups, but basically gave up and retired, until I tracked her down in Detroit. Both Sylvia Moy and I were amazed at the richness of her voice, reminding both of us of the late great Esther Phillips. Sherri considered herself a jazz singer and had been influenced by a combination of Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughn, Della Reese, and Billie Holiday. Sylvia wrote these wonderful lyrics for her to a backing track I'd prepared. "Weak Hearted" was released as a single on the Motorcity label back in 1991. I have no idea what's happened to her since then. She seems to have vanished back into obscurity, but I do hope she's still around. We lost far too many of these great singers of the past. The backing vocals are done by all four of the original Andantes, those legendary Motown backing girls, sounding as sweet as ever.
