As we come around the final corner, a push of the throttle is all it takes for us to start to slide. It’s all under control, yet we straighten up only just before we hit the dry part of the track. Then we’re off again, with an exhaust bellow and enough power to pin you to your seat.
You might think we’re in a race car, or even a supercar. But we’re not. We’re in a two-tonne-plus luxury off-roader. This isn’t any old high-end 4x4, though – it’s the Range Rover Sport SVR. This is our first proper encounter, albeit as a passenger, as JLR’s handling and development expert Mike Cross gives us a ride around the Rockingham circuit in Northants.
